Springwater is an amazing place! Would you believe that in one and the same month we would have not one, but two wildlife photographers coming to share their talents? The Springwater–Webster Crossing Historical Society is hosting John Adamski on Wednesday, Oct. 10, while the American Legion Post 905 has Charles Alsheimer coming on Wednesday, Oct. 24. Why not come to both?
On Oct. 10, the Historical Society meeting will begin with a dish-to-pass dinner at 6:30 p.m. and the program at 7:15 p.m. Everyone is invited to attend, as it is open to the public. John Adamski has presented slide shows in the past 40 years to youth and adults. His presentation will include butterflies, birds, small animals, deer, bighorn sheep, moose, elk, humorous photos, landscapes and some history on the plight and re-population of the bald eagle, bison and elk.
Be aware of one of the latest scams: Hundreds of people who have purchased drugs over the Internet or via telephone have unwittingly exposed themselves to extortion by individuals posing as Food and Drug Administration agents. Here is how the scam works: Someone will call you and identify themselves as an FDA special agent or another kind of law enforcement official. You will be told that purchasing drugs over the Internet or phone is illegal and you will be threatened with prosecution unless a fine or fee — ranging from $100 to $250,000 — is paid! The Spaghetti Dinner and Music Jam at Webster’s Crossing United Methodist Church in September was well attended. Many thanks are extended to everyone that participated in any way. The next one will be on Thursday, Oct. 25.
Webster’s Crossing United Methodist Church Pastor Regina Shaw’s granddaughter was born on Tuesday, Sept. 25, and Tommy and Shana Martindale welcomed a new baby girl into their family. Harper Ann was born on Wednesday, Sept. 26. This little girl is No. 21 (grandchildren and great-grandchildren) for Pat Martindale of Webster’s Crossing.
After a week of travel, I am pretty well tuckered. I made all my travel connections to visit with my family in Chicago and Fairfield, Iowa, on my way to my 60th high school reunion at El Paso High in El Paso, Texas. The rain came down in buckets on the parched land on the day I arrived, Sept. 28. We had several meals together with old friends and acquaintances — 58 out of 212 of our January and May graduating classes in 1952 — toured the school which is now designated as a national historical site, and enjoyed the view of the city lights from Rim Road just below the lighted Texas star on the mountainside, a landmark.
The Springwater Trails hikers enjoyed a superb hike Sunday, Sept. 30, and this week on Oct. 7 they will be hiking the All Western Evergreen Nursery & Christmas Tree Farm trails with a mushroom foray led by Gene and Georgia Binder of Wayland. The hike will begin at 2 p.m. and end around 4:30 p.m. with a social at the house at 6840 Liberty Pole Rd. For details go to the Springwater Trails website, www.springwatertrails.org.
