The Springwater Gala Committee is back to meeting once a month on the first Thursday at 8 p.m. at the Springwater American Legion on School Street. This year several changes are in the works to “freshen” it up and make it “more entertaining” according to chairman, Larry Gnau.

This year the committee has already decided to donate any proceeds to help veteran’s causes. They have also decided to go with a Kansas City Barbecue theme sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society (www.KCBS.us) and the event will be carried as the “Podunk Pig Party.”

According to Gnau, “Fireworks are on the fence for this year. They consume almost all of our profits, and bring in very little money. Last year, we backed away from our hamburger booth for the same reason, too many man-hours and too little income.”

Gnau also states, “There are several good ideas on the table, but without manpower many may not come to fruition. It is not necessary to attend every meeting, but input is needed and everyone is encouraged to assist in this endeavor.”

If you wish to have more information, contact Larry Gnau at 669-9330.

Big news at the Wayland Free Library; local author, Kay Thomas will be doing a book signing for her new book: “And one More Thing: I Brake for Squirrels and Other Thoughts I Have No Doubt About” ... on Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2-4 p.m. Her book is “a collection of 24 short essays taking you on a journey where you will pause to reflect on the little things in life that you have no doubt about whatsoever.” The book will be available for purchase at the signing and is also available from lulu.com and amazon.com for $9.99.

A reminder to the members of the Library Board of Trustees, there is a meeting on Monday, Nov. 12, at 5 p.m.

The library offers two pre-school reading programs for the toddlers in this area. The Pre-K Story Hour for ages 2-4 offers stories, games, and crafts on Fridays at 10 a.m. and the Mother Goose on the Loose for children birth to 3 years of age is offered on Wednesdays at 11 a.m. Reading is essential to giving our little people a good beginning for life and both of these programs allow caregivers an opportunity to network with other adults.

Saturday was a day jam-packed with activities in Springwater. The annual Christmas Bazaar at the Websters Crossing UMC was well attended and my family and I picked up a few of the handmade items for Christmas presents. We enjoyed a pleasant lunch of homemade chili, returned home with enough time to attend to some errands and then met up with the rest of the family at the Springwater Fire Hall for the annual Turkey dinner put on by the Springwater UMC. When we left at 5:30 p.m., Mark Walker informed me that they had already sold over 200 dinners.

This Saturday, Nov. 10, is the annual Veterans Day dinner for all of our area veterans. The doors open at 5:30 p.m. and dinner will be served at 6:00 p.m. The Ladies Auxiliary Unit of the Springwater American Legion will cook a fine dinner of roast beef with all the trimmings and guest speaker is Undersheriff Jim Szczeniak. Please consider donating boxed or canned food items for the food drive that traditionally kicks off on Veterans Day.

A reminder to all of our Springwater residents that Monday, Nov. 12, is a very important day at the town hall. A special informational meeting will be held there at 7 p.m. to inform people about the proposed increases in the water and sewer rates. Since many people living in the water and sewer districts are seniors and do not come out in the evenings, family members can speak on their behalf. This is also the last town board meeting for November.

Yard signs for political candidates traditionally come down shortly after the election. The Democratic candidates have requested that their signs be returned to them, so anyone who has placed signs around town should return them to my home and I will get them back to their point of origin. Republicans have not indicated how they wish to handle their signs, so please contact your local chairman for that information.

Have a safe week.
