The Valley View: Autumn colors arrive in Springwater

The colors of autumn surround the valley. Despite the chill in the air and the cold rain showers, the beauty of fall is everywhere. Like an itinerant painter, Mother Nature slipped in and randomly colored our world in bright hues of crimson, russet, and orange. The resident horse is shedding his sleek coat and putting on his winter fur; the resident white possum is bulking up, and the geese are busy gleaning the corn fields in preparation for their winter migration. Large flocks of birds are seen daily heading south, and soon our human “snow birds” will also seek the warmer climates.

The rain has been very persistent this past week and with the showers have come some very stiff breezes whistling down the west hills and rattling the windows. Sunday was that type of day and when the grey skies and cold breezes were beginning to make me a bit testy, a bright bluebird flew by the window. As I watched him dancing between the raindrops, he hopped off the corral post and into the corral where he fed for several minutes on the ever present supply of insects before departing to my neighbor’s apple tree. Bluebirds do not eat birdseed, but they love meal worms, insects, raisins, and berries and will stay in our area until they can no longer find food readily. Sighting a tiny blue bird can bring a smile and a real lift to your spirits on a grey day!

Absentee ballots are now available for anyone who will not be able to get to the polls in November. This includes anyone who is a student, a snowbird, all infirmed and housebound residents, and anyone who will be out of town on Nov. 6. The Board of Elections will be open extra hours for absentee voters. Here is the schedule they will observe: Monday, Oct. 22; Wednesday, Oct. 24; Tuesday, Oct. 30; and Thursday, Nov. 1, the office will be opened 4:30-7 p.m. On the last two Saturdays before the election (Oct. 27 and Nov. 3) they will be opened from 9:00 a.m. to noon.

The ballots for military personnel on active duty have been sent out. Check with your service personnel and make sure they have received their ballots and have returned them to the Board of Elections. As we have seen in the past two weeks, a single vote does count and it is important for everyone to become part of the process.

The Springwater American Legion Post 905 located at 7998 School St will host a Food Handler’s course on Saturday, Oct. 13, at 9 a.m. presented by the Livingston County Health Department. All volunteers for churches, non-profits and those working in the restaurant business, are required to take these courses to protect both themselves and their customers. Every attempt has been made to let people know at our churches that this course is being offered and they are welcome to attend. There is no fee for this program but a head count is needed by Friday, Oct. 12, so enough materials will be on hand for the course. It should take no more than two hours for the complete presentation. Please call the Springwater Legion at 585-669-2300 and leave your information on how many will attend on the voice mail, or call President Bill Morgan at 585-728-5552 with the necessary information. You do not have to live or work in Springwater to take this course.

Tuesday, Oct. 18, the Springwater American Legion will hold their monthly meeting. Preparations are underway for the Veterans Day dinner, and help is needed to make this a successful event for the veterans. The joint meeting begins at 7 p.m.

Have a great week!
