As this first Chalk Talk of the 2012-13 school year heads to press, our thoughts and prayers are with those in the south who are struggling with the Isaac storm. We hope your lives can return to some form of normalcy very soon.
Lockers are filled up and students have been back to school for a couple of days now. For those at the upper levels athletes have been at practice for a couple of weeks, students at all ages have attended orientations and school visit, and Robotics Club members have already started building for their competition season. Throughout the halls the activities have returned with a great deal of eagerness and excitement. September always brings with it the promise of new beginnings, more opportunities and the promise of a great future.
If you have not already done so, please review the salary guidelines for the free and reduced lunch and breakfast program. There are many working families that can benefit from this program. Additionally, the aid provided to the school district is impacted by the rate of our families using this program. Likewise, steady and growing involvement provides opportunities like the summer feeding program that nourished numerous children over the summer months in Cohocton at the school and at the park program. If you have questions regarding the program, please contact Deb Mehlenbacher at 585-728-2150. Also, if you are not already aware, please note, that lunch prices have increased five cents at all building levels. Our website features a great deal if information including online lunch payments, free lunch account tracking including information about what your child is eating, menus, free and reduced lunch/ breakfast applications and birthday celebration order forms. (All school treats must be prepared in a licensed kitchen.)

The return to school, and any transitional time, can be a difficult one for students. Each of the buildings have numerous programs and personnel who are interested in making sure your child’s time at school is one of positive emotional growth. If your child is struggling, please do not hesitate to contact the office of your child’s school and we will work with your family to help your child adjust and feel supported and safe in a manner that also encourages their academic growth as well. Help us make sure that no child falls through the cracks.
We are excited about the 2012-13 school year and look forward to continuing to develop our relationships with students, families and the community. We hope to make this share experience a great one. Many thanks to the staff at the Genesee Country Express for allowing Chalk Talk to return for another year.
