Be careful asking restaurants for recipes. Sometimes you’ll get more than you expect.

A Chicago couple was on a Southern vacation when they discovered a bleu-cheese dressing in a hotel. They enjoyed it and asked the waiter for the recipe.

He took their name and address and true to his word, sent the recipe to them, plus a bill for $300. They paid up after consulting an attorney who advised they had ordered it without asking the price and could not assume it would be free.

The recipe and its story has been passed around since 1950, primarily in church fund-raising cookbooks.

$300 Dressing

1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon dry mustard
2 teaspoons paprika
2 teaspoons celery seed
3/4 cup sugar
1 cup vinegar
2 cups vegetable oil
4 green onions with tops, thinly sliced
1/2 cup bleu cheese crumbles

Place bowl in larger bowl of warm water. Whisk all ingredients in warmed bowl until dressing composes. Then place in refrigerator. Serve cold over chilled hearts of lettuce or bibb lettuce.
