Breakfast

The first thing your family should eat in the morning  is a good breakfast. If you decide to skip it, you’ll be more inclined to binge on a high-calorie lunch, according to a study presented at the Neuroscience 2012 conference. The study found that those who didn’t eat breakfast ate 20 percent more calories at lunch than those who ate a healthy breakfast.

Yogurt

Eating yogurt for breakfast is a win-win situation. A recent study found that eating 6 ounces of low-fat yogurt three times a week can lower high blood pressure risk by 31 percent.

Labels

Just having a quick look at labels will help you be an average of 9 pounds lighter than those who don't scan labels, says a study published in Agricultural Economics. Check for sugar content, calorie count and fat.

Coconut water

When your child is done with soccer practice, swap his Gatorade with some coconut water. Energy drinks tend to be very high in sugar, compared with coconut water, but both contain the electrolytes he’s craving post-workout. And a 2012 study found that the coconut water is just as effective as an energy drink when it comes to replenishing electrolytes and minerals lost through sweat.

Blame your genes

If you or your children are dying to be thin, you may have to blame your genes for that desire. A recent study of twins published in the International Journal of Eating Disorders found that genes account for 43 percent of thin idealization.
