Families living within the Wayland-Cohocton school district now have a a centralized place to go for a variety of resources.
Cornerstone Community Resource and Youth Center, located at 2 N. Main St., Wayland, conducted its grand opening/ open house Oct. 17, a project five years in the making.
“The board’s been meeting for a year, we have a good foundation of what we’re doing; a foundation of agencies that we’re working with, and we’re ready for the community to know that we’re here,” Debbie Vanscooter, the center’s director said.
The mission of the center is, “Connecting people, changing lives and strengthening communities.”
The center has had a few activities going on for the past year to get its feet wet, such as parenting classes, cooking classes, youth programs and others. And now, the center is ready to go full bore.
For the open house, the center showcased the many resources that will be available there, some through Steuben County agencies, others through local volunteers who have expressed a willingness to give to the community.
Among the services that Cornerstone is hosting includes Early Head Start for children up to age 3; parenting classes for all levels of parenting; joint cooking classes for children ages 8 through 12 and their parent/guardian; a youth program; plus is a place for people to find resources from agencies such as Catholic Charities; Cornell Cooperative Extension; Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of Steuben County; Office for the Aging and Faith in Action.
“My goal would be to see something going on here all the time, constantly, every day,” VanScooter said.
The Cornerstone building entails a room in the front for the Heat Start, plus an office, a large-group classroom, a room for tutoring, and a youth recreation room.
The youth recreation room is open two hours on Mondays and Fridays for ages 10 to 14.
Once a month, the center hosts structured, themed activity nights for the kids, “We do everything from movie night to outdoor activities. We’re doing a teen Halloween dance this month, just different activities to get the kids out on the weekend,” Kellie Mark, youth program director said.
The resource center will be having a fundraiser Oct. 29 immediately after the Wayland Rotary’s Halloween parade. The fundraiser will entail a hayride, crafts and treats at Victory Park for children up to 10 years old. Tickets are available for $5 each. A haunted hayride will be available for older children in the evening from 7 to 10 p.m. Tickets are $8 each or two for $15.
Tickets are available through Kids at Jean’s Place; Debbie’s Cafe and the Dansville-Wayland Pennysaver office.
