With some votes remaining to be tabulated, Democratic candidate Dick LeBar appears to be the top contender for one of two trustee positions in the village of Dansville with the other position up for grabs between Republicans Dick Whitenack and Lynn Reagle.

As of Tuesday night’s unofficial, preliminary election returns, LeBar had secured 277 votes, Whitenack 255 and Reagle 253. Democratic challenger Andrew Kershner trailed behind at 123 votes.

“My intention is to be an active member of the board,” LeBar said. “I will be available and I am approachable.”

He added that he intends to get right to work once sworn into office in April.

“I am going to kick into high gear right off the bat as they are starting in next year’s budget. So there’s not going to be a long introductory period,” he said. “I thank those that supported me, but now that I’ve been elected, I represent the entire community.”

As Reagle and Whitenack await the final tabulation, expected early next week, both said they will be satisfied with the outcome.

“I’m just waiting like anyone else. The absentee ballots are the controlling factor. As far as between Dick (Whitenack) and I, we’re on the same page,” Reagle said.

“We’ve got the same thoughts and the same agenda as far as how to bring the village forward.”

“I’m willing to work with anybody to do the best we can for the community,” Whitenack added.

While 18 percent of Dansville voters turned out for the election, Reagle said he thinks many voters are discouraged by political process and didn’t participate.

“Voters don’t realize that in the town and village elections, their vote actually counts,” he said.

Two uncontested races for village justice will leave those two candidates in office. Democrat David Werth garnered 339 votes for another two-year term. Republican Joshua Weidman was appointed and secured 326 votes to continue serving in an unexpired term.

Wayland

In Wayland, all voted have been counted. Though still unofficial, Michael Parks appears to be succeeding Brian McCoy as mayor, overcoming Renee Fleishman 143-105. In the trustee race, Phil Berry and Madelyn Wolfanger lead with 186 and 132 votes respectively. Michael Grasby Sr. was close behind with 128.

Thomas Recktenwald III will continue as village justice, having secured 211 votes.

Total voter turnout in Wayland was 243, including seven absentee ballots.
