Sen. Charles Schumer understands the importance of dairy farms in New York and the need for immigrant workers.
“We can’t get Americans to do this work,” Schumer said in a gathering in Avon last week. “We need to rely on non-Americans to do heavy labor on farms.”
In a discussion with local dairy farmers, Schumer revealed his plans for a new immigration bill. The bill would put illegal immigrants on the path to U.S. citizenship while working in the agricultural field.
Workers will have to maintain a job in the agricultural field for a not yet determined number of months without committing any crimes.
After that time period, the worker would be allowed to apply for a work visa. If approved, they could continue working in the agricultural field.
Eventually, they could apply for U.S. citizenship.
With the bill in the tentative stage, the duration of work before applying for the work visa and the duration of work before applying for citizenship have not been determined.
The workers would be allowed to travel to and from their home country and get driver’s licenses, as they could with a long-term work visa.
Schumer is optimistic the bill will be passed but asked for local help.
“Tell your local leadership you want this,” the senator said.
The farmers thanked Schumer for his continuous assistance with the immigration laws.
“You understand our issue,” said one farmer. “Thank you for speaking from your heart.”
Schumer urged farmers to reach out to him if they had anything they thought should be added.
“I look forward to hearing your ideas.”
Schumer hopes to have the bill passed by the end of the year.
