Patty Davy of Dalton was looking for a reason to chop off her hair. It was too long for her liking, washing it became a chore and she was getting tired of how much work it required.

After expressing her frustration with her co-workers at the Genesee Country Express and PenneSaverPlus, they began encouraging her to cut it.

“I wanted to cut it,” Patty Davy said. “I just needed an excuse.”

In those talks with her co-workers, the idea to donate her hair was presented. With that, she looked into Locks of Love and found her excuse.

Locks of Love fabricates hairpieces for children who have lost their hair due to a long-term medical illness. The hairpieces are made from real hair donated to the organization.

Davy knew donating her hair was the what she was going to do.

So on Feb. 16, she took a trip to her daughter-in-law’s salon, HML Designs in Leicester.

Heather Davy divided her mother-in-law's hair into three ponytails, two on the side and one down the back. When the hair was divided, Heather Davy snipped off the three ponytails.

“The two on the side were around 10 inches,” she explained. “And the one down the back was over 11 inches.”

That’s more than two feet of hair she donated.

“I’ve never had it that long,” she said. “I never will again.”

After the hair that was to be donated was cut off, Heather Davy still had to cut some more in order to style it.

“There was still an awful lot (of hair) on the ground,” marveled Patty Davy, who said she is much happier with her shorter hair.

Despite feeling good after donating her hair, Patty Davy is sure this will be the only time she donates it.

“I probably won’t let it get that long again,” she confessed.
