This scarecrow doesn't have to see the wizard to get a brain, he earns it by going to school.

Is there a convention?

Once again, the Village of Nunda has been adorned with visitors stuffed with fluff and straw.

The third annual Fall in Nunda has attracted a number of scarecrows to the small Livingston County town.

No, not for a scarecrow convention, but as Cindy Welch, Nunda Area Chamber of Commerce president said, it’s “just something we tried to do to dude up Nunda.”

The scarecrow contest is a low-key event, Welch said, but “every year it gets a little better.”

As the chamber’s website indicates, winners of the contest win nothing more than ribbons and bragging rights. It’s the fun of participating that’s the draw.

Visitors get to choose their favorite scarecrow by stopping by a shop and simply voting.

The contest is to draw visitors, put a smile on faces, enhance the village area and help promote shopping locally.

A new Village-sponsored shop-local campaign called Nunda First was announced last month, and a declaration designating the month of November as the official shop-local month was announced by Mayor Jack Morgan during the board’s regular meeting Oct. 8.
