It’s bound to happen once in a while — not exactly what one wishes for an outdoor festival, but those who endured the heavy, cold, blustery downpour and stuck it out afterward, seemed to have fun in spite.
Ossian Heydays and Outhouse Races took to the grounds of Ossian Community Center last Saturday, and for the first hour or so, saw a good number of people milling about and enjoying the traditional outhouse race and redneck olympics despite threatening skies.
However, not long after the awards for the race and olympics were presented, the skies burst open and crowds thinned out as some vendors called it a day. But that didn’t stop the toughest rednecks around from engaging in shooting sports, a petting zoo, food, throwing friends in the local pokey and staying around to see who was this year’s Ugliest Redneck (a four-way tie), and other events. Just two events were cancelled - paintball and sumo wrestling.
When asked how it went overall, organizer Michelle Vanderbosh said, "Joyous." Although the grounds were dampened, "I didn't have a dampened spirit," she said.
Although the event is a fundraiser for Ossian First Presbyterian Church, it's not all about making money, it's also about having a good time, Vanderbosh said. While the church probably didn't make a lot this year, it also probably didn't lose money, she said. However, final tallies are not yet in.
This was the sixth Heydays event.
