While many could say they’ve been to Carnegie Hall to watch a performance, not many can actually say they’ve had the privilege of performing there.
But one Wayland-Cohocton 10th grader, Abbie Beaupre, will be able to soon say that. Abbie will be part of an elite student choir that will perform there on Sunday.
Last spring, high school music teacher Brenda Richey nominated Beaupre for the honor through the American High School National Honors Performance Series. Beaupre received news in October that she was selected into the 2012 American High School National Honors Choir.
“I think it’s one in a million, and I never thought that I would get this opportunity,” Abbie said just before taking the stage at Nugget Hill in Wayland last Sunday.
Her performance there was part of a matinee called, “Abbie and Friends,” which was a fundraiser for her trip.
The matinee also included performances by the middle school’s Spotlight and Spotlight Pink choruses, as well as the high school Women’s Select Chorus and others, including her mother, Nancy Beaupre, who performed sign language to the Contemporary Christian hit, “He is With You.”
Abbie will perform six songs with the choir at Carnegie Hall.
During the five-day trip, students will have the opportunity to rehearse, be part of a music seminar and, of course, see New York City.
Representatives from collegiate music programs will be listening attentively in the audience Sunday, while the students will be under the direction of highly renown conductors.
“She’s always loved music,” Nancy Beaupre said, adding that Abbie has been blessed by being surrounded by people who have encouraged her in her musical endeavors.
In addition to the choir, other students from across North America will take part in performing in an orchestra or band.
