A former Wayland man will share the spotlight with Paul McCartney, Oprah Winfrey and others Dec. 5.
The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts announced its selection of the 2010 Kennedy Center Honors Sept. 7, and 1970 Wayland High School graduate Bill T. Jones is among them.
Jones was born in Bunnell, Fla. in 1952, the tenth of 12 children. His family of migrant farm workers moved to Wayland, where they settled.
After graduating from Wayland High School as a highly respected athlete and performing artist, Jones went on to SUNY Binghamton on an athletic scholarship, and majored in theater. In 1982, he co-founded Bill T. Jones / Arnie Zane Dance Company, which has since toured more than 200 cities in 30 countries.
In addition to creating more than 140 works for his own company, Jones has also created, collaborated and directed works for a number of other companies and artists, as well as having been featured on television and Broadway.
Other than the upcoming Kennedy Center Honor, Jones’ other accolades comprise of two Tony Awards, a MacArthur Genius Award, an honorary doctorate from Juliard, having been featured on the cover of Time magazine and many more.
Jones is described on the Kennedy Center website as “a powerful dancer by any standards, a provocative choreographer of exuberant genius, one of the finest directors on the American stage and perhaps, above all a humanist...”
Other than McCartney and Winfrey, Jones will be sharing honors with Country singer Merle Haggard and Broadway composer and lyricist Jerry Herman.
The Honors are scheduled for broadcast on CBS for Dec. 28 at 9 p.m.
