A number of important notices have been sent to Wayland-Cohocton families this week. First and foremost is a change to the Thursday go-home early day. The 2:30 p.m. dismissal for all students allowed for collaborative work time for all teachers, however it has proved to also support a number of challenges, primarily because of the loss of valuable time for high school and middle school students to receive extra assistance due to the loss of 13th period during the week.
At the beginning of the year, the district attempted to have separate days on Thursday and Fridays for the different buildings but this has created an unmanageable busing issue. In order to provide the maximize time for students and provide the collaborative time necessary for teachers, beginning Friday, Nov. 2, all students will be dismissed at 2:30 p.m. and there will be no 3:30 p.m. run. High school and middle school students will have Mondays through Thursdays to receive extra help and teachers will work collaboratively on Fridays.
We understand this means many families will need to make changes to their child care providers and we are sorry for the complication. Please make sure your updated information for go-home on Thursday and Friday, particularly for elementary students, is arranged prior to this date. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s building and they will answer questions. We appreciate your understanding on this mid-year change.
Also, high school parents should have received notice via email or mail that parent-teacher conferences in the high school will be handled slightly differently than in the past. Parents have been provided a list of teacher emails and may now contact teachers directly to schedule the conference. These conferences can be held at any point throughout the year as a child’s progress or needs require or as a parent has concerns. There will no long be parent-teacher nights in the high school as slated on the calendar for Oct. 18, Dec. 19, March 13 or May 23. If you have questions, please contact your child’s teachers directly or contact the high school office. Teacher emails are also available on the staff directory on the school’s website under the “parents” tab on the gold bar at the top of each page.
Families are reminded that Tracey Bauer from RiteAid will be at the Wayland-Cohocton Middle School Ehatlh Fair giving flu shorts on Wednesday, Oct. 14, to those over the age of 18. Please provide a copy of your health insurance ID card from Excelleus, NYS Medicaid, TriCare, MVP, Blue Choice or MEDCO and the flu shots will be given at no cost to you. Otherwise, the shot will cost $29. Don’t miss the health fair Oct. 24 in the Middle School gym from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Although this is geared for middle school students, there is always something for everyone.

The Health Fair falls right in the middle of Red Ribbon Week, Oct. 22-26, during which the middle school students will be recognizing the benefits of living a drug-free life. There are theme days and fun planned throughout. Check out the website for the themed-dress-up days and join in the fun. This is also a great way to begin conversations at home as well.
The middle school band will be joining the community for the annual Rotary-sponsored Halloween Parade at 1 p.m. in the St. Joseph’s parking lot on Saturday, Oct. 27. The parade will end up at the Five Star Bank where Rotarians will serve cider and donuts. Should the weather be nasty, the Rotary will post a sign at St. Joseph’s and the event will be moved to the Wayland American Legion on Main Street.
