Congratulations are in order for the two PageTurner teams which competed at the winter competition in Letchworth. The Cohocton team brought home first place honors this year with the Wayland Elementary team earning second place. The students read books and meet at least weekly to discuss those books. The competition is a team event with students answering questions about the books in a competitive format. The competition is always tough and exciting. Congratulations to all of the great readers that took part.
Wayland-Cohocton music groups are celebrating the season with some great events in the community. On Dec. 20, listen to the Eighth Grade Chorus, Spotlight and Spotlight Pink singers can be heard in a recorded performance on WKPQ Country Radio at 4:30 p.m. on the Lee Richey Show on 105.3 FM. Those groups will also be joined by the High School Jazz Band and the eighth grade band at Arnot Mall on Dec. 20 where they will perform in front of Bon-Ton entrance at 9:30 a.m. The High School Jazz Band will perform at 11 a.m.
The high school is currently in competition with Dansville Central School and Batavia to raise money for the Red Cross Sandy Relief Efforts. A donation buys you a link on a paper chain. The three schools are competing to see who can build the longest chain to show their support for the Red Cross.
Thursday night, Dec. 6, Wayland-Cohocton singers will take part in heralding in the holidays at Christmas in Wayland. Santa will be there and numerous home-business vendors at the American Legion. Also at the Five Star Bank there will be a living nativity and a chicken barbecue to benefit the Vincent House.
Families are reminded of the YMCA Childcare programs that are on campus. The YMCA provides before and after school childcare programs for students ages 5 through 13, 6:30-9 a.m. and 2:30-6 p.m. The registration fee is $20 per child and rates vary. Snacks are provided in the afternoon and breakfast is provided in the morning program. Students participate in crafts, play games, go to the computer lab and take part in physical games in the gymnasium when the space is available. The great thing about the program is that you can drop your child at the school and know they are already where they will be spending their day. In the afternoon you know they will arrive at the appropriate destination because it is just down the hall.

Upcoming events: Please remember that there is an early dismissal on Friday, Dec. 7, at 11:30 a.m. This is a change from the district’s original calendar and will allow for professional development time for the staff. Friday, Dec. 7, is also the end of the 15 weeks, which is particularly significant for students in grades 5-12 as a way to mark their progress between report cards. The Board of Education will meet on Monday, Dec. 10. If you are interested in knowing more about the Middle School Robotics program the students will be presenting information about their 2012 competition season. The meeting is at 7 p.m. in the LGI. The Fifth Grade Winter Concert is slated for Tuesday, Dec. 11. The Select Chorus will perform on Wednesday, Dec. 12, at the Wayland Historical Society Museum on the corner of Washington and South Main streets. The event is free to the public although donations are always gratefully accepted. There will be refreshments. The High School holiday concert will be at 7 p.m. on Dec. 13.
