Although a number of teams chose to pay more and go further to Fairport on Saturday, Dansville’s annual Spirit Challenge was still a big hit despite being down a few teams.
The event again packed the house and Mustang cheer coaches Larry and Phyllis Greene tweaked the line-up a bit by offering not only a doubles competition, but a jump off as well.
“We had 30 jumpers and I’m surprised you couldn’t hear the crowd all the way up-town,” Phyllis Green said. “They were really in to it. They were counting the jumps down and everything. It was a wonderful success. There was a lot of excitement and spirit here today.”
In all, 35 teams were on hand as Dansville’s cheerleading program offered a low-cost alternative to help area teams and districts who have been strapped from the financial standpoint. They lowered the price for team registration to the tournament and Dansville was also much more centrally located for a number of schools who took part.
The Dansville girls will compete Jan. 22 in Fredonia, as they simply did the welcome cheer for the start of the activities this past Saturday and were the hosts for the Dansville event.
Larry and Phyllis Greene are already working on the 2012 Spirit Challenge.
