Outgoing secretary to the superintendent, Sue Sylor, was given a rousing standing ovation and words of accolade during the Aug. 23 Dansville Board of Education meeting in honor of her many years of service.
Sylor retired from the district Aug. 31 after having served alongside 17 superintendents during her 38-year career in the Dansville Central School District.
Superintendent Paul Alioto said that she has had a warm and welcoming demeanor toward everyone, and that for nearly four decades, she has been a tremendous source of stability and was the heart and soul of the school district.
Board of Education President Mary Ann Holden commended her longevity and said that, “over the last twenty years, I think Sue has been the glue that has held this office together.”
She said that Sylor’s service and wealth of information has been vital to the board as well.
Beside the Board, friends and former colleagues came to the meeting to give their thanks and well-wishes to her also.
Nancy Hussey, former elementary school principal, said Sylor has been a significant source of help to the many building principals throughout the years.
Board vice president Peter Bacon read aloud a letter from former Superintendent Adele Bovard, now the Webster school district superintendent. Her letter stated that Sylor was, “always warm, always professional and you were someone who could be trusted in all situations.”
Al Hawk, a former board president, commented on her continuity, and that, “I think a lot of superintendents avoided a lot of pitfalls and achieved a lot of things they never would have achieved otherwise due to Sue as a backup.”
Dick Gillard, also a former board president, said that she always treated her many superintendents with respect, and “your professionalism is outstanding.”
Current Ellis B. Hyde Principal Jeremy Polotti, reiterated Hussey’s statements regarding her help to the administrative staff, and said, “the wealth of knowledge that you have, that you have been able to help us with, as you have mentored us...is just unbelieveable.”
When Sylor’s turn to speak came, she said, “I am so grateful to everyone, I made such wonderful friendships and such great relationships. I can’t even think about how this time went by so fast and all the people that impacted my career as well.”
Sylor said that she’ll still be around, and will help out at her husband’s business on Main Street.
In addition to Sylor, Pricilla Abbey, a pool and cafeteria monitor; and John Gascon, an elementary school cleaner, were honored for their retirements that night as well.
Vaune Crawford, former district receptionist and secretary, took over as the new secretary to the superintendent effective today, Sept. 1.
