The Dansville Board of Education unanimoiusly approved leases for KidStart and Genesee Community College in the former middle school building starting Sept. 1.

The two entities will occupy six rooms of the building, Dansville School Superintendent Paul Alioto said.

KidStart’s portion will include the health office, guidance office and three classrooms, plus yard space for a playground and fence. Kidstart will also have a secure entryway.

KidStart’s lease is expiring at their facility on Main Street, and is moving its entire program to the middle school building. They will operate 11 months out of the year. Its lease with the school district runs until Aug. 31, 2012.

GCC is leasing a former music room for a music appreciation elective. The instructor will be St. Peter’s Episcopal Church music director, Tom Folan, who has earned a doctorate from Eastman School of Music.

The class will include performances by various types of musicians who will be travelling from near and far.

GCC’s Dansville campus is entering its 10th year, and has the largest enrollment in any of its satellite campuses. The Dansville campus is seeing a 20 percent growth rate over last year alone.

Regarding adding a music appreciation class, Dansville dean of students Peter Soscia said he “couldn’t be happier” to see the students take an interest in academic learning beyond their core curriculum.

This is the first music class to be offered through the Dansville satellite campus.

“I think that we have a unique opportunity to grow the education industry in Dansville,” Alioto said about this lease agreement, adding that he is apprehensive of the school district being landlords, potentially competing with private landlords.

“We don’t want to take business away from property owners. I can justify this relationship because of the potential benefit to our kids and the potential benefit to the community as a whole.”

The middle school building was left vacant at the end of the 2010-11 school year due to the district needing to cut as much costs as possible after state aid losses. The district anticipates saving roughly $250,000 this school year alone through its closure.

Starting this coming school year, middle school grades will be split between the Ellis B. Hyde and high school buildings.
