When the Ellis B. Hyde Cross Country Run began in 1976, physical education instructor Fred Hoyt intended it to be a fun run for fitness. But on it’s 35th anniversary, it became more than just that.

On a sunny, warm Wednesday afternoon, 481 EBH students, as well as many members of the faculty and staff, participated in the run/walk which doubled as a fundraiser for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month.

“I think it’s wonderful,” Lisa Swindon, senior development manager for the Rochester Chapter of JDRF said during the Nov. 2 run.

“The kids show a lot of selflessness in their willingness to fundraise for JDRF.”

The cause was led by fifth grader Carter Davis, who suffers from Type 1 Diabetes, and his family.

“The entire Dansville community and especially the Dansville School District  has been very supportive since Carter's diagnosis, and this wonderful turnout was just another example of how great the school and our small community is and how much they have supported us,” Carter’s mother, Cindy Davis said.

“Carter is an amazing young boy who has handled his diagnosis so much better than I have.  He makes me a stronger person and I love him with all my heart.  Until we find a cure I will continue to advocate not only for Carter but for all the kids who are affected by Type 1 Diabetes.”

When Cindy discovered that JDRF conducts walk fundraisers with schools, she thought that it would be a great idea to incorporate it with the annual EBH Cross Country Run/walk.

The students went door to door asking for donations last month, and raised a total of $2,876.29 through this effort. As is usually a component of a JDRF/school fundraising partnership, 10 percent of the proceeds go to the host school.

EBH Principal Jeremy Palotti said the money will go to the school’s physical education department.

“EBH is grateful for our physical education staff, especially for Coach McMahon, for their organization of this event as well as to Mr. and Mrs. Davis for bringing this idea of connecting this long standing event to a real need in our school community," Palotti said.

The Cross Country Run is a roughly mile-long run/walk from the EBH grounds down Weidman Lane, around Babcock Park and back to the starting point on the school grounds.

Awards were given for first through sixth places in each grade level.

Sixth graders Jacob Wadsworth won overall in the men’s division and Gabby Anderson won overall in the women’s division.
