Beer of the Month: Firestone Walker’s Wookey Jack

I’ve generally been a fan of black IPAs, but my one complaint with the style is that there is a sameness to them, with a few exceptions.

One of those exceptions is the Firestone Walker Brewing Company’s Wookey Jack, an unfiltered black rye IPA.

The 8.3 percent alcohol by volume beer smells like a big IPA, with citrus and pine on the nose, as well as a hint of rye.

That rye is what really separates this beer from other black IPAs. It has the hoppiness of a really good double IPA and the nice, dark malt backbone, but the spicy rye just adds a different dimension, and actually drys the beer out a bit. You want to take one sip after another after another after … you get the picture.

I’ve had this both on draft and in bottle, and enjoyed it immensely. If you see it on the shelf buy it – you won’t regret it.
