WAYLAND — I can hear that old Hank Williams Jr. song in the background now, "Are you ready for some football?" Community Youth Football League teams will be opening up this Sunday (Aug. 24) and among them one of the "newest" (sort of) entries. The Wayland "Junior Eagles" (formerly the Redskins) will be taking to the gridiron for their opener against the rival Dansville Jr. Mustangs at Victory Park to kickoff the season this weekend, while the Junior Eagle Cheerleaders will be gracing the sidelines. Following many years as the "Redskins" the organization decided to convert the name amidst the swirling controversy surrounding the NFL team's nickname. The board made the decision to get in line with the school program from the nickname's standpoint and adopt the 'Junior Eagles" to reflect the continuance of play on the youth level which will eventually lead many of the youngsters into the Wayland-Cohocton high school programs. In the front office, Jen VanOrsdale has taken over as president. She's assisted by a pair of vice presidents, Dan LeClair and Ron Garrison. Amanda Ruscitto is the treasurer and Beth Adams assumes the secretary's role. Other members of the board include Rich Lock, Tracy Swift, Brandy Kinney, Erin Swain, Tim O'Connor, Marki Hough and Crystal Doty. Head coaches for the football teams include Mike Adams as Senior head coach, Tim Willis is the assistant coach, Keith Barnard is the Juniors skipper, while Shawn Harvey leads up the flag team. The Junior Eagles’ 2014 slate shapes up this way for the upcoming season:
