  • New president, new season: Junior Mustangs 'Ready!'

    • email print
  • In most cases, people come in and "take the bull by the horns." With regards to the Dansville Junior Mustangs youth football and cheerleading programs, new President Margaret Foster is ready to take "the horse by the reins." That's the story here in 2014 as the red and black have taken to the gridiron and the sidelines to get practices underway for the rapidly approaching season. One change for the good for the fall is that all members of the Community Youth Football League have adopted the U.S.A. Heads Up Football philosophy. The initiative is endorsed by NFL coach John Harbaugh of the Baltimore Ravens and is designed to help make the sport of football better and safer. U.S.A. Football, through the program, offers a comprehensive collection of resources, programs, applications and promotions to create, change and address the complex challenges of player health and safety in youth and high school football. Some of the key components are education and certification, equipment fitting, concussion awareness and recognition, heat and hydration, and heads-up tackling. I have to believe that anything to help make our young people safer while participating in athletics is an extremely good thing! This year there'll be a couple of special events taking place. The first will be "McCoaches Night" at McDonald’s of Dansville on Wednesday, Aug. 20, where all profits from anyone who orders food between 5 and 8 p.m. will go to purchasing the girls new cheer sneakers. The cheerleaders will be taking part in their annual "C.Y.F.L. Cheer Off" coming up in October. There will also be the "annual Flag Football Tournament" taking place on Saturday, Sept. 20, at Ralph Clements Field, kicking off at 1 p.m. The Junior Mustangs’ home football game under the lights will take place that night as Dansville entertains Livonia. The lineup for board members this years reads this way: President Margaret Foster, Vice-President Jeremy Black, Treasurer Cheryl Quibell, Secretary Pam Mensinger, Athletic Director Chad Foster, Assistant Athletic Director Jerry Freeman, Cheer Coordinator Sarah Connor, Assistant Cheer Coordinator, Alicia DiSalvo, Concession Stand Joie Petrillo and Lindsay Gregorius, Banquet and Apparel and Fundraising Coordinator Jessica Carnevale, Senior Team Coordinator Jason Forrester, Junior Team Coordinator Vaughn Mehlenbacher, Flag Team Coordinator Don Mosko, Public Relations and Team Books Jennifer Jacobs. Head coaches for the upcoming season will be: Don Mosko, Flag Football; Mel Mensinger, Juniors; and Ron Cartwright, Seniors. On the cheerleading side of hings, Kelly Hamsher will head up the Flag cheer team...Holly Cartwright has the juniors and Monica Gayhart the seniors. This year's CYFL schedule for the Dansville Junior Mustangs shapes up this way, with the opener coming up soon on Aug. 24.
