ANGELICA — An Angelica woman made a split-second decision Tuesday evening to save the life of her granddaughter just as she was about to get struck by a truck while walking in the village.
Amity-based State Police said Cynthia "Cindy" L. Polanowski, 43, died after the accident while crossing the street at the Park Circle in Angelica.
Troopers said a truck driven by Shayne Ellsessor, 50, of Angelica, struck Polanowski and Robyn White of Angelica, who was walking a dog. The dog was deceased at the scene, troopers said.
White was treated and released from St. James Mercy Hospital.
Family members said Polanowski pushed the stroller to safety and her 2-year-old granddaughter suffered bumps and road rash. The infant was treated and released from St. James Mercy Hospital.
Troopers said Polanowski was transported to St. James Mercy Hospital by Angelica ambulance and pronounced dead from head trauma.
Troopers said Ellsessor was not injured from the accident. An investigation at the scene showed Ellsessor was not using a cell phone, was not intoxicated or impaired in any way. State Police were assisted at the scene by the Allegany Sheriff’s Office and the Angelica Fire Department
