  • A 12-year-old boy chasing after his baseball was struck and killed by a car near Dansville on Thursday afternoon.
Livingston County Sheriff Thomas Dougherty said Emery Lafferty was playing with a bat and ball by himself in his yard when he went after the ball on Groveland Station Road at 4 p.m.
Sheriff Dougherty confirmed the boy died as a result of injuries from the accident.
"It was a beautiful day and he was doing what kids do," said Sheriff Dougherty. "It's just tragic."
The driver vehicle Donna Scura, 68, of Wayland, was not charged. The speed limit is 55 on the road and deputies at the scene said speed was not an issue.
Lafferty recently transferred to Dansville from Salamanca Central School in Cattaraugus County. Grief counselors were available this morning for students at Dansville Central School.
Police said the investigation is continuing.
Assisting on scene were members of the Sparta Fire Department, Dansville Fire Department, Dansville Ambulance, New York State Police, Livingston County ALS and the Livingston County Coroner's Office.
