  • WELLSVILLE — Workers at the Allegany Arc recently announced that with an overwhelming majority, they are organizing to join the Civil Service Employees Association, Inc. (CSEA).
“The group officially filed on Feb. 12 with the National Labor Relations Board, with the requisite majority of eligible workers, and presented signed union authorization cards designating the Civil Service Employees Association (CSEA), Local 1000, AFSCME, AFL-CIO as the exclusive representative for the purposes of collective bargaining,” Jill R. Asencio, CSEA communications specialist in Albany, said in a press release.
In a letter written to the Allegany Arc management announcing the action, the employees wrote, “We love our work and know that our individuals and their families rely upon us to be strong, professional caregivers. We are skilled labor, and deserve to be treated as such. We are organizing our union to have a voice on the job, to ensure equal enforcement of fair policies and to become partners in promoting and ensuring quality care for our individuals of Allegany Arc.”
Approximately 250 workers are in the bargaining unit, Asencio said.
“The process involves filing a petition with the National Labor Relations Board to conduct an election to verify that majority. The election will be held in March,”?she said. “There are approximately 250 workers doing the kinds of jobs that would be included in the proposed bargaining unit.”
Allegany Arc workers began speaking with CSEA organizers last fall, Asencio said. “The employees gain the opportunity to participate in decisions about their jobs and to negotiate with the Arc management about the terms and conditions of their jobs,”?she said. “One goal is to negotiate a contract spelling out many of those terms. If a majority of the employees votes in favor of forming the union, then the agency would be obligated to bargain over a contract with the union.”
