GAINESVILLE -- Top-seeded Romulus was too much for No. 2 Jasper-Troupsburg in Fridayís Section V, Class D1 championship game. Heck, the Warriors would be tough for teams in any class to keep up with.
Using speed, size and skill usually not found in the Ds, Romulus beat the Wildcats 73-50 at Letchworth Central School. Now, Romulus will take on Class D2 champion Prattsburgh in Mondayís crossover game.
Romulus (20-0) opened the game with a 10-0 run, led 16-3 after the first three minutes of the game and was up 24-6 at halftime. The opening salvo was orchestrated by Romulus junior point guard Cheyanne Howe, who knocked down two consecutive 3-pointers before one minute had passed. When J-T collapsed on her, Breanne Berlin got the ball inside and made the Wildcats pay. Overall, all five starters for the Warriors scored at least four points before the second quarter.
There was simply too much skill on offense and defense, and this was a game between two teams that combined for 37 wins this season.
The tempo slowed in the second half, but the Wildcats (18-2) didnít have the time or personnel to claw their way back into contention.
Berlin finished with 23 points for Romulus, while Jessica Rhone netted 14 points and Howe had 14 points.
J-T was led by McKenzie Prutsmanís 18 points (14 in the second half), Hannah Miles had 12 points and Angel Schoonover chipped in 5 points.
