OSSIAN— Sheila Young saw a need in her community and knew she needed to do something about it. So she got some friends and family together to help her renovate and reopen the Country Corner General Store on Kysorville-Byersville Road.

Young attributes the community for her decision to open the store, describing the lack of a store in the Ossian and West Sparta community. Although the sign boasts a General Store, one step inside will make any patron realize it is much more.

The handmade shelves compliment the knotty pine walls and the tables welcome anyone to sit down and indulge in a cup of coffee. With an assortment of penny candy lining the cash register it’s easy to feel right at home in the General Store.

Keeping with the theme of an honest community store, signs on some of the shelves ask customers to suggest items they’d like to see the store carry in the future.

“We’d like to make this store, your store; so we left these shelves for you to fill,” they read.

The other shelves carry everything from toothbrushes to cookies and just about everything in between. Opposite the shelves is the restaurant area of the General Store which serves pizza, subs and chicken fingers, to name a few.

Fish Frys have already become a staple on Friday evenings and come summertime, a barbecue.

The store officially opened Dec. 15, 2013 with the help of many family and friends putting in endless hours of work. Since then the community support has been overwhelming, which was evident on their grand opening Jan. 10. The store was filled with community members looking to celebrate with the Youngs.

“It’s a huge transformation, there’s much more area and I love the knotty pine,” said patrons Rick and Darlene Pfaff. “We’re amazed at how much work they put into this. It was definitely a need for this community.”

Currently, the store is open Monday—Thursday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. They are located at 8851 Kysroville-Byersville Rd., for more information check them out on Facebook or call 585-335-9577.
